Please join us for the virtual BCBA presentation Civil Litigation CLE: Using Colorado’s New Anti-SLAPP Law to Protect Victims of Abusive Litigation, presented by Kazi Houston.

Has someone you work with been sued for speaking out about their victimization, to the police or otherwise? That kind of lawsuit might be a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP) suit, which is intended to hinder someone’s rights to speech and petition. States across the country have implemented Anti-SLAPP laws to provide some additional protection from legal action for people faced with a SLAPP suit.  Colorado’s Anti-SLAPP law went into effect in July of 2019 and is an important tool for protecting victims from abusive litigation.

In this session we will talk about Colorado’s Anti-SLAPP law.  We will also walk through an Anti-SLAPP case where the ability of a perpetrator to sue their victim for defamation was successfully blocked by Rocky Mountain Victim Law Center. You will hear about challenges implementing the law, challenges with litigating a new law for the first time, and lessons learned in building a strong Anti-SLAPP case. Sample pleadings and a list of key cases will also be provided to attendees.
